A few years back I read Superman: Red Son, now I’m not a huge fan of Superman or anything, this story just stood out to me. I guess its the alternate history it takes place in. The entire stories premise is summed up in one sentence. What if instead of landing in America, Superman landed in the Soviet Union. It was a fun story line and I do recommend it.
Now, in Red Son, it introduces a fantastic character that I really want to see more of. Soviet Batman. He lives in a sewer, isn’t rich, wears a heavy coat and one of those Russian winter hats. The bat symbol is sewn onto the chest of his jacket and he still has gadgets. But what make this version of Batman interesting to me is that he isn’t out to stop crime, hes out to bring down Superman’s regime. You see, Soviet Batmans parents weren’t killed by a criminal, they were killed by the KGB. SO he became a rebel, fighting communism and doing what Batman does.
We only see Batman in the Red Son story for a short time he plays a large role and eventually kills himself with a bat-bomb strapped to his chest. I want to see what he was doing before the events in Red Son. I want to see Batmans rogues gallery reimagined in this universe. I want to see Batman fight the Soviet Union because he’s the god-d*** Batman. Perhaps the Joker is a sadistic secret police officer, going about the world with complete authority to do whatever he sees fit. Maybe the Killer Croc and Mr. Freeze are Soviet experiments gone horribly wrong, and in an effort to brush them under the rug they escape and wreak havoc on Moscow. Dr. Strange will probably still be a Psychologist, but he would have the full authority to do whatever it takes to find Batman. The possibilities are endless in this. We can even have all of Batmans allies. Robin could be a young boy Batman rescued from a Soviet labor camp. Nightwing could be a CIA agent sent in to investigate the Soviet Union. Catwoman could be a ex-KGB agent trying to redeem herself. We already have the Green Lantern Corps which is pretty much an elite branch of the US army.
So please DC, give me more Soviet Batman crashing through skylights into party headquarters. Give me a new addiction.
