To bring more Firefly to the League website I chose to film the Q&A being hosted at the Sci-fi Expo in Irving, TX. Not sure what will come of this, having seen others with celebrities not of the friendliest persuasion just there for some publicity I still went. The sheer number of people lined up for this panel is a testament to the fan base this short lived series had produced. This line wormed around and around, like opening box office lines for the next Star Wars movie. There were so many people that they were actually unable to accommodate everyone for the Q&A, and they by no means used a small room. I estimate there had to be a couple hundred people stuffed in the room all. The patrons attended just to see Adam Baldwin (Jayne), Jewel Staite (Kaylee), Ron Glass (Shepherd Book), and Sean Maher (Dr. Simmon Tam) answer a few fan questions about Firefly/Serenity. Too often actors and actresses get together for a project, it does well, and they make it work (sometimes for many many years) but seldom do they develop much chemistry between them as a team. But this was different; this group was extremely at ease with one another. You could just see it in the easy way they spoke, poked fun at each other, and laughed at their inside jokes. They had the easy familiarity seldom seen outside of a well knit military unit. A group that has gone through much together; that has seen the best and worst of each other. All aware on how to get under each other’s skin and how to make each other blush. That easy chemistry was seen in the way they clowned around at the panel; basically having a great time of it and not just there for publicity. This if nothing else warms me to this group. I am pleased they managed to find this rare chemistry, and am glad that their many fans got the privilege to see that in person for themselves. I hope this continues at any other conventions that fans get to meet this small band of characters again.
On a plus side, it was nice to get Adam Baldwin’s nod of approval at the entrepreneurial spirit comprised by the sheer number of Jayne hats worn in the room. I counted about 37 in the room myself, but I might have missed a few. It’s always nice to get approval from the source.
