You know, I am a sucker for a good horror movie. Even not so good ones can still be fun. Well there is a new horror movie out there called The Tunnel that takes a very novice approach – it is entirely free to torrent and download. And trust me, it’s worth it.
Granted, the found footage aspect has been done many, many times, but nothing really has had the impact like the Blair Witch Project. The Tunnel feels very much like the movie that kicked this craze all off. It is a story about 2 survivors telling their story about what happened after they went under the city in the tunnels to figure out why the government was not creating it into a recycled water plant. Four go in, and only two come out.
I think what works the best for The Tunnel has to be when they finally get into the actual tunnels. It is dark and cramped and there is nowhere to run. Many shots have you on the edge of your seat waiting for that BOO moment, and they don’t come when you expect them to. It’s thrilling and frightful and damned good. It almost feels like a First Person Shooter most of the time as you find yourself going down halls after halls and I kept thinking “I would be searching for a Green Herb right now”. You get lost with these characters and you start to not want them to turn around thinking something is behind them.
Unfortunately, you have to sit through a lot of character building beforehand so that you can actually care about these people in peril. I would have loved to see them develop underground instead of wasting so much time beforehand. I always say get to the good stuff! And underground worked on so many levels. It wasn’t the characters that made it work. It was atmosphere. As it is, the characters kind of annoy me. Logic dictates that if you find your friends flashlight in a bloody room, then it is time to get the hell out of there. That happened once here on the moon. Trust me, a bloody room never ends well.
They also made a few pokes at other horror clichés, like splitting up. Why the hell would anyone want to split up? But the best horror fact about it is that, unlike the Blair Witch, there is something very real and very frightening down there. And you never get to see it very well. I cannot ruin it for you, as you have to see it play out for yourself. Just know it is done so amazingly you will get a chill down your spine.
I love this movie. Yeah, it may be because I love the crazy horror movies like this (I loved Quarantine after all) and it has a lot going for it, but the most interesting aspect is that it is free. They said screw the pirates, screw the critics, screw the system. This thing is free to download. And this is not like your average Sy Fy made for TV movie (which outside of Sharktopus have been really, really bad) either. This is damned good work on the maker’s part. I will definitely recommend this to everyone. It is a tense time that you can really sink your teeth into. So go forth Minions and spread the love of horror done right and promote the heck out of The Tunnel. You will not be sorry.
