There Goes Tokyo!

Who doesn’t remember being a kid and watching Godzilla movies? It was so cool to see these bigger than life monsters going head to head causing untold destruction! And then you went out and caused untold destruction by building Lego cities and tearing them down with a mighty roar. It was so simple, and so fun. So why has it been so hard to translate into a board game format? Some have come close, but now we have something that almost does it perfectly.

Anyone remember ToyVault? I do as a toy collector. They have been quiet lately but they have come back in force with Godzilla Kaiju World Wars, a board game that pits kaiju (those big ol monsters) against one another where destruction and battles are the key. What’s not to like? Well a few things, but really they are just minor. If you look around online and see the other reviewers they are pretty harsh over this game. I mean, no, it is not perfect, but you know what? It is really fun.

I first heard about this game long ago from our great friends Roll2Play as they were super excited about it. So I kept my eyes out and got in contact with ToyVault about a review copy. And before I knew it I got one in the mail and we just couldn’t wait to play it. I will be honest, I did go into it with reservations. I mean an awful lot of people were pretty negative about it. So let’s just get the bad things out of the way now – No, Rodan does not stand up. Major design flaw there, but nothing you can not fix with some superglue and a penny or something. The rule book is rather vague at times, so it does lend to some confusion, especially with the military units. And the buildings that turn to rubble do not sit flat and it is nearly impossible to stand a figure on them. And the kaiju cards for each beastie could use a few more.

But you know what? Those are not anything really bad. Remove the building when it is destroyed. You will know it is a rubble space. For everything else, house rule it. If there was ever a game perfect for house ruling, this is it. It is perfect as it lays the groundwork for the rules, and you can easily customize them to better fit your Godzilla experience. It already does a damn good job of it. Destroy building, get in epicly awesome battles and generally cause much mayhem. It is an awesome game time.

And the game is super easy to get. Battles are quick. You use power cards to duke it out, and you never know what will happen. It all comes down to the roll of a die. Which my die rolls sucked when we played. I played as Rodan. I flew straight to Godzilla and we fought it out hardcore for a few rounds till I died cause I never got what I needed to hit anything. I even threw a tank at him, RIGHT NEXT TO ME, and missed. Screw you Rodan. Screw you. But I digress. The game is simple and it is fun and it is something you can play with the kids (wait till Lil Stone gets a hold of this) and makes for a really fun and crazy family game night. And it seems like they are building up a fun online community for it. Click HERE to see for yourself. NEW stuff to download! Awesome.

Kaiju World Wars is really a fun time to be had despite the detractions. If you like fun and senseless destruction, then look no further. You will have a great time here. And if I am not mistaken, this is the first of a line for the Kaiju World Wars. I hope it is. I want a Gamera Set and I want a Mothra set and all the other fun man in rubber suit/giant puppets on strings type of movies to battle with. I really, really want to see Orga in this game. I loved that alien thing. I hope it does not go the way of Monsterpocolypse and do random blind pack deals. I want simple expansions, more boards (imagine Monster Island!) and other fun things that can all interwork with each other. It will be awesome. So I am happy with this game. It was a blast, but we definitely need more than two people to play. Kaiju World Wars is a party game for sure. The more the merrier. Once we come up with our house rules, we will post them in our forums to share, and mayhaps send them to ToyVault and see what they do with them. Now I wonder how long it will take us to make our own Kaiju to play with?
